Object storage does two jobs at once: it takes bulky files off the application server, and it keeps backups outside your own network. The second has become critical since ransomware learned to hunt for backup files and destroy them before encrypting anything else.

Setup

Buckets with an EU provider offering an S3-compatible API, access policies and encryption.

Backup target

Backups of servers, Microsoft 365 and databases are shipped to the bucket automatically on a schedule.

Object Lock

Objects cannot be overwritten or deleted until the retention period you set has expired.

Offloading the server

Images, PDFs and uploads from the website move to the bucket and free up disk on the web server.

Keys and permissions

Each system gets its own key, able to do only what that system needs.

Lifecycle rules

Older data moves to a cheaper storage class automatically or is deleted when its period ends.

Configuration takes a couple of hours. How long the first large upload runs depends on your internet connection.

An access key with delete rights makes the whole safeguard worthless. If your backup software uses such a key, ransomware can wipe the backups together with the live data. The key should be write-only, and the bucket itself must hold objects for the full retention period.

Common questions

A network drive is folders that users and programs open directly. Object storage is reached through an API, scales almost without limit and can lock data against change. It suits backups, archives and web application files, not documents staff edit every day.

A common pattern is daily copies for 14 days, weekly for two months and monthly for a year. Keeping everything forever is expensive and clashes with the GDPR principle of storage limitation, so deletion rules are set up on the same day as the first upload.
